In 2010, Renzenberger drivers in Chicago organized the first legitimate union in the history of the Rail Crew Hauling industry. Until then, drivers were either non-union, or trapped in corrupt employer-dominated organizations. Chicago drivers were the first in the industry to win paid time off and other benefits. They won seniority rights, protections for Road Drivers, job security and fair wage increases. Soon after, drivers from all over the country began organizing with UE.
But to keep drivers from winning a real union, the Company signed contracts with National Production Workers Local 707, a notorious, corrupt company union. This meant that drivers had to wait years in order to exercise their right to win a real union.
Since then, thousands of rail industry workers have left 707. This summer, even more drivers will get the chance to ditch 707 and join UE, the biggest union of Hallcon drivers. Together, we can negotiate the contract that all drivers deserve!
